Stitching the World
Map samplers from eighteenth-century England
1701–1801
In late eighteenth-century England a schoolgirl might learn geography with a needle: stitching the outline of England and Wales, county by county, and signing and dating the finished map. These samplers, now at Cooper Hewitt, record the maps and the names of the girls who worked them.
